This Wednesday, 26th June, the presentation of the Tomate Huevo Toro 2024 campaign took place at the "Finca Miguel González Salas: La Hilita" in Coín. The event, organised by the Asociación Tomate Huevo Toro, Frutas y Verduras del Guadalhorce together with the GDR Valle del Guadalhorce, with the support of the Diputación Provincial de Málaga, was attended by the Director of the Cártama Regional Agricultural Office, Isabel María Serrano; the Director of Sabor a Málaga, Leonor García Agua; the first deputy mayor of Coín town council, Antonio González; the manager of the Guadalhorce Valley Rural Development Group, Sebastián Hevilla, and the president of the Association of Tomato Eggs, Fruits and Vegetables of Guadalhorce, José Guerrero, together with numerous institutional representatives from the gastronomic and business sectors.
As is now traditional, the day began with a visit to the aforementioned farm where the hosts, Ángel and Santi, explained how the crop is developing and what the expectations are for this year, which has been marked by limitations with regard to water resources. After the visit, the different authorities present spoke and Isabel María Serrano reiterated the support of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development for the Huevo Toro tomato, highlighting that 'these producers and their association are the ones who defend this product with sustainable management, being a local product, closely associated with the territory and sold in short distribution channels".

Arroz campero, roasted ingot with white garlic and 'Huevo Toro' with orange
On this occasion, chef Diego René from the Beluga Restaurant in Malaga has offered a 'Arroz campero con tomate Huevo de Toro'; chef Dani Peregrina from the Karmela restaurant in Alhaurín de la Torre who has prepared 'Huevo Toro tomato ingot, roasted with wasabi roe and caramelised white garlic' and chef Pablo Vega from the Ménade restaurant in Vélez Málaga who has prepared 'Huevo Toro, orange, salted fish and goat's cheese'.
From the host municipality, Antonio González, highlighted how in Coín they strive to highlight the value of the tradition of these market gardens which ensure that the Huevo Toro tomato is on everyone's table "for yet another year the Tomate Huevo Toro tomato campaign is kicking off in such a lovely place as the Llanos de Coín. We are always grateful for the work of the farmers, but even more so in years like this one, which are particularly difficult due to the drought, as this tomato needs a lot of work and a lot of water".
Sebastián Hevilla commented on the production season and the crop forecast "this year the planted area has been reduced due to the scarcity and poor quality of the water, however, it is hoped that we will be able to cover the demand. Finally, José Guerrero, thanked all those present for their attendance and explained the situation of the orchards "the growers in the association have planted for the moment, some more and some less, but the concern about water is there. For now we are planting, we have water and the plantations are perfect, very beautiful, what we need is for the water to last all summer. If everything goes well it will be a good season".
